Me Time

Me with my furry child and sweet toddler, Austin.

As parents, we try so hard to maintain routine while constantly micro-managing the household and ourselves. Are you a stay at home mom or dad or do you work a 9-5 job? Do you find that there is hardly enough time in the day or even the week to fit even an hour in for yourself? Does your to-do list keep growing? I hear you and I feel you.

I have to make “me time”because I find that when I get some time to take care of myself, I’m a better mom, wife, and business partner. I’m able to reflect on my day and appreciate the person I am for the people I love, including myself. Often times that means waking up before my daughter wakes up, not over-booking my schedule, and asking my husband and family for help when I just need a break without feeling mommy guilt.

I’m a work from home mom and my typical day looks something like this. What does your day look like? Take a minute to write down what a normal day looks like for you. You will see that as parents, we do a lot! We are so deserving of time for ourselves, so don’t feel guilty about taking some “me time”. You will feel refreshed and this will allow you to put your Super Dad or Super Mom cape on and get back to being the best parent you can be.

  • 6 am- “me time” Wake up and workout (run on a treadmill and do a fitness video before my daughter wakes up)
  • 7 am- My daughter is up. I get her dressed, make her breakfast, and take the dog for a walk.
  • 8:30 am- Drop my daughter off at school.
  • 8:45 am- Shower and get ready for work- haha, most days this basically means putting my sweaty hair in a bun and putting on my mom uniform of yoga pants and a hoodie.
  • 9 am- Work day begins. I read e-mails, make sales calls, and make a plan for the work day. I work for our small family business, so I put a lot of pressure on myself since my dad is my boss. I want to make him proud.
  • 12 pm- Eat lunch (usually at my desk). I spend most of my lunch break prepping my lunch because cooking is one of my hobbies, so that’s my “me time”.
  • 1:30 pm- Pick my daughter up from school, bring her home for a nap, and get back to work.
  • 4 pm- My daughter wakes up from nap. I get her a snack and finish my work day while she eats.
  • 4:30 pm- This is time to get errands done. I run to the store, bank, post office, dry cleaners, etc. If I don’t do it now, it won’t get done.
  • 5 pm- Do an activity with my daughter and our dog like taking them to the playground or going for a walk.
  • 5:30 pm- Prepare dinner.
  • 6 pm- Dinner is served.
  • 7 pm- Bath time for our daughter. Hubby usually takes over and I sit down to get started on my next work shift for a start up I’ve been working on called Social Cub.
  • 8 pm- Sit down with my husband and try to take “me time” to relax for an hour or so with an adult coloring book, magazine, Facebook stalking, or a television show.
  • 9:30 pm- My husband goes to sleep and I take “me time” to work on Social Cub.
  • 11 pm- Time to sleep!
